Think you understand what “metabolism” really means? Now try to define it. Pretty tricky, right? Metabolism is the thousands of chemical reactions that turn the energy we eat and drink into fuel in every cell of the body. These reactions change in response to our environments and behaviours and in ways we have little control over.  While it would be easy to blame our waistline on a “slow metabolism” or dream of improving our physique with one of the trendy metabolism boosters at the health food store, metabolism is nearly impossible to affect, and changes to diet and exercise only marginally shift our metabolism. Scientists and nutritionists concur, that in fact, small, everyday choices are the only sustainable way to bring on long-lasting change within our bodies, and the “lucky cousin with a fast metabolism” probably just says no to that extra cookie and chooses the stairs over the elevator.
